Coaching Report

A new beginners coaching group will start next Wednesday, May 8. If you know of anyone that is interested please contact me on 0412829051.

Since the last newsletter, seven new members have been coached in the beginners coaching course, increasing our numbers to nine since the beginning of the year. These new members are very enthusiastic, with a number of them playing in our recent Novice Competition.

Auditor Needed

The club is seeking a volunteer auditor. Our previous auditor was Craig Fraser. As Craig holds a position on the committee this year, he is ineligible to be our auditor.

The criteria for our new auditor:

Can be a club member, but does not have to be a member.

Should have a basic understanding of computer bookkeeping. No accounting qualifications needed.

No prior audit experience is necessary. Full training will be provided, as well as an audit programme to follow.

Timeline would be available to start the audit from 10th July.

Audit would need to be completed and signed off by 5th August, so it can be distributed to members for the AGM on 20th August.

If you can help or know of anyone who is able to do the audit, please contact Craig on 0438 877 603

President's Report

Supporting Patsy’s report on the Creightons Novice competition, it was a highly successful day. Patsy & Hazel deserve a lot of praise for the way the day was organized.

Happy to share some good news with you all. As you may be aware late last year, we applied for a $10,000 grant through the NSW office of sport. The grant was for next years lawn renovations. Well we did not get the $10,000, but the good news is we have been notified that we have been granted $8,350.00.  This will cover our budget for lawn renovations for the next financial year. We will review our next years, budget at the May COM meeting

I believe our lawns are improving but will always remain a work in progress

I hope you all continue to enjoy your croquet no matter what code you are playing.

Lawn Maintenance

The normal mowing schedule is Mon. – Tues. after 3 pm – Fri. after 2 pm.

However, when we have extended periods of rain the mowing schedule has to be organized around the lawns drying out & there may be a need to mow on any available day. I realise that when members cannot play due to bad weather they try to fit in games of an afternoon. The lawn maintenance group will try to work around anyone playing at these times, but I stress the mowing & rolling of the lawns takes priority & people may have to move lawns to allow the proper maintenance to take place.

Your cooperation with this will be greatly appreciated.

Colin Gibbons, President

Creightons Novice Competition

The sun shone on everyone and especially on the spirits of all those who recently attended the Creightons GC Novice Doubles.  The day prior to the competition had seen heavy downpours blast the area, likewise on the weekend following that Friday’s play.  However, on Friday 19 April, the day dawned bright and sunny and 20 novice players, most of whom had been playing for a very short time, set forth in a spirit of fun and enthusiasm which lasted the entire day.

EDSACC is very lucky to have amongst its club members those who are willing to volunteer to help on days such as these.  Plus, thanks to the continued efforts of the grounds maintenance team and volunteers, the grounds sparkled and the lawns ran true and straight.    A sunny day sandwiched between days of rain showers, it was a day to have fun, and fun was certainly had.

The competitors had previously attended workshops on handicapping and GC rules, plus coaching sessions in which they had learnt the necessary skills and tactics to advance their game.  And they certainly proved that they had listened and learnt effectively.  They played well, errors were few and many games were hard fought.

Final Results were:-

Block B Winners Tricia Stringer & Anne Hine (4 wins)  Photo: bottom right

Block B Runners-Up Yvonne Zavasky & Lyn Maunder (3 wins)  Photo: bottom left

Prizewinners were awarded their awards/prize money by Creightons’ Representative Erin Harris who likewise seemed to enjoy the day.

It was great to see the sense of fun and camaraderie which permeated the whole day.  Well done to everyone.

Cessnock ‘Fun’ Day
Seven EDSACC players – Hazel & Colin Gibbons, Patsy McCaskie, Penny Hill, Anita Beer, Laurice Rogers and Kerry Farrell - recently travelled to Cessnock for its annual ‘Fun Day’.  It proved to be a long, hot day with experienced croquet players from around the Hunter Region completing challenges working as individuals, not as either a team or as part of a doubles combination. A good time was had by all, with special commendation due to Kerry Farrell, as a complete novice, being brave enough to pit her skills against experienced players from around the region.  The Day’s winner was H7 Cathy Hurst of Maitland, with National & State H1 player Sue Sellars of Toronto being the Runner-Up.

Games Captain's Report

Well done to all those who entered the recent Creighton/s Club Novice competition and congratulation to our place getters in each block of play. I would like to offer my thanks to Hazel Gibbons and Patsy McCaskie for organising and managing this event at our club.

It is good to have all 4 codes of  croquet running at EDSACC. If anyone is interested in knowing more about any of the codes, other than golf croquet, have a chat to Carol Bennett for Ricochet, Larry Bryant for Association and Cheryl Patterson for Gateball.

At present we are looking to form Pennants teams for Association and Golf Croquet in this year's State Pennants Competitions.

During the last week of June and first week of July, EDSACC will be holding the Creighton's Club Ricochet Competition. These games will take place on Wednesday and Saturday mornings during the Ricochet playing times.

Players Representative Report

It is wonderful to be able to play on all four lawns again and we have had many members commenting on how great the lawns are to play on....it is a credit to all those who have been involved in the renovations.

Welfare Report

I have been in touch with Adolphe Parfait who has had successful heart surgery and is recovering well.

A few other members have not returned to the club due to ongoing medical issues and we wish them a speedy return to the lawns.
